we provide the first step in the process of Fine Art Reproduction: the Digital Image Capture.
DOCUMENTATION - When the highest fidelity archival documentation of flat artwork
or other important documents is required we provide Digital Image Capture.
We use the state of the art BetterLight Super 8K digital scanning back with a 4X5 view camera equipped with the best lenses available to achieve the highest quality image capture of your original artwork. The BetterLIght scan back is a direct to digital image capture device that is capable of resolving extremely fine detail as well as capturing very accurate color.
Two sizes of digital capture files are available with our standard scan service: 300MB or 500MB. The basic 300MB file is recommended where reproduction print size from the capture file will be 30X40 inches or less. For work to be reproduced with an output size larger than 30X40 inches we recommend the higher resolution 500MB scan file service. Note that these output sizes are not the size of the original art. For instance: a 20X30 inch original drawing or painting could be reproduced as a 40X60 inch print using the 500MB scan.

Standard Image Capture Service includes:
- Consultation With the Artist - To determine the artist's intent and requirements for the image capture we meet with the artist at the beginning of each job.
- Image Capture in our studio - Capture parameters, especially lighting, are customized for each job based on the artist's requirements and the character of the original art. For example: we can emphasize or de-emphasize the texture of brushstrokes in an oil painting by simple changes in the geometry of the lighting. Each job is customized as part of our standard service.
- File Optimization - Fine tuning of the color correction and contrast of the camera file to match the original artwork.
- Files Burned to CD - The customer is provided with a CD containing the color corrected and color managed 300MB or 500MB image capture tif file. Also on the CD is a 500 pixel wide jpg file of the image capture for web use or cataloging purposes.
Our Standard Image Capture Service is for original flat artwork up to 45X60 inches maximum photographed in our studio. Artwork with metallic paints, metal foils, or other highly reflective surfaces may require special techniques that might incur additional cost. Any additional cost will be identified and quoted before the work is performed.
Artwork larger than 45X60 inches can be accommodated and will be quoted on a custom basis. Work that requires setup and image capture on location at the artist's studio, gallery or museum will be quoted on a custom basis.
While it is possible to photograph artwork behind glass, it is not desirable. Artwork framed with glass or acrylic glazing should be removed from the frame prior to submitting the work for image capture if possible.
